I woke up with that good song in my head, it reminds me of all crazy things I did. I miss my Rock'n'Roll times and the taste of travel with my friends-musicians. Music is not just pleasant waves or background for our feelings. Music has an incredible sense for every person, for somebody music is the meaning of life.
Today I want to introduce my French friend Olivier Raynaud! He is a professional drummer, also known as a part of Sonateen and Groovy Shiva!
How long do you play drums?
I started to play drums when I was sixteen, with my friends in south of France. We wanted to play Rock, Crossover, Hardcore, Hip-Hop and Electronic music. It was a very good time. I'm influenced by Hip-Hop and US Rock from the 90's and able to play a large panel of style, always by making my contribution very singular. It's been only 2 years since I decided that I would like to make my music a full time job. I would like to say thanks to my parents, who let me practice Nirvana and other RATM drum patterns in my room when I was a kid.
Playing drums - is it just a hobby or something more?
Never take your music as a hobby! Even if you don't make money with it. The goal is to create, to build something interesting, to find a way... You promote your band, give your music on the web and hope that people will like it and they will come to your shows. You will sell your CDs there, merchandise and your band will exist. That is the reality for the bands.
My motivation is to play music with my friends as long as we can. It's a long term story. Authenticity, Family, Love, Fight for Life are the main subjects that I like to represent. Of course my goal is to bring my projects as far as it possible.
Tell me about your music projects.
GROOVY SHIVA is a crossover band, very influenced by the musical scene of East coast and West coast, formed in 1998 in south of France. It's definitely my family, kind of my life project with my friends. I'm 34 now and we are still playing music together, that's the dream...
By the way, we are doing a new song inspired from a novel called "METRO 2033", written by Russian author Dmitry Glukhovski. It's a post-apocalyptic story and also a bestseller. Our singer is inspired by that book. As a good gamer, he is a fan of the video game, made by the 4A GAMES Company from Ukraine. We want to make a tribute to that story.
SONATEEN is a Hip-Hop project with my friend Tarum (@Tarum182). It's a 2 pieces band, Drums & DJ: 2 Caps Headz who plays Hip-Hop like Rock. It's been 10 years since I met him. He is a great musician and producer, also an easy going guy. Sonateen is a young project, influenced by the 90's, with powerful drum patterns. With help of Live Factory (ed. an artists' management agency), we had the opportunity to play at the famous big stadium le «Stade de France» in Paris last September, for the big Hip-Hop event “Urban Peace 3”, it was sick! We are looking for bookers to play in Sports Events, Extreme Sports Events, anyone interested in the audience?? ;)
WEST COAST DAILY is another band with my best friend Tarum, who sounds like a very teenage Pop Punk Rock, somewhere between Bowling For Soup, Blink 182 and Sum 41.
Is it hard to be a manager and artist at the same time?
I learn artists' management and music publishing. That helps me to manage my musical projects. I work also as a tour manager with several bands and artists from France and USA. I worked with Charles Bradley (and his musicians, part of the Menahan Street Band) as a tour manager two years ago in Europe. That was one of my best experiences. Charles himself told me that my style on drums is «pocket drumming».
With what projects you've reached the best results and success, tell about your best shows.
With Groovy Shiva we have a good success with that song «La Liste». And with West Coast Daily our cover of Yael Naim's «New Soul» appeared in the famous compilation Paris Dernière 7. We play it very dirty and punk.
I can't really say «the one and the only best show that I did». Touring in Indonesia with Onesta (HxC band from Paris) was crazy! Jamming with Norwood Fisher (Fishbones) in a little bar in south of France for my birthday was sick too!
What artists would you like to work with?
There are a lot of Dope D.O.D. is definitely a music project I'd like to work with. I already sent my book to their manager and booker Andries from 3S Music, he is a very cool guy and he told me there is no casting for drummers now. But who knows, maybe next year. Haha !
What will you recommend for people who want to learn to play drums?
Work hard, play different, act like playing drums is a sport!
